As wildfires sweep across North America this summer, entire communities are being displaced, local food systems disrupted, and pantries stretched thin just as need surges. Disasters like these deepen a crisis that never really goes away: an estimated 40% of food produced is wasted while 1 in 7 people go hungry. When families are forced from their homes and relief networks strain to keep up, the gap between food that’s thrown away and mouths that go unfed becomes impossible to ignore.
That’s the gap Rescuing Leftover Cuisine was built to close. Their volunteers rescue meals that would otherwise be discarded by restaurants and food businesses and deliver them straight to the people who need them — at homeless shelters, food pantries, and soup kitchens. This month, we’re standing with RLC to turn waste into relief. Your support helps purchase the packaging and transport equipment — aluminum trays, carts, and more — that make every food rescue possible.
June: Proving Access to Clean Water in Kenya
The Mango Tree Girls School is a boarding school for girls between the ages of 13 and 18. It provides education to highly vulnerable and orphaned girls. The school relies on rainwater harvesting, which depends on the rainy seasons. In the absence of rain, water has to be transported to the school by a tanker from 10 km away—a costly and unsustainable solution.
To address this, the school plans to drill a solar-powered borehole and construct a water reservoir that will supply water by gravity for domestic use, irrigation of the school farm, and access by the surrounding community.
May through October is dry season and the island of Borneo needs help. The rainforests of Borneo, home to the critically endangered orangutan, are threatened with large-scale destruction due to fire. In recent years, droughts have lasted longer and become more frequent.
Through this project, we aim to recruit, establish and maintain a permanent fire brigade. We will equip them with specialized firefighting equipment and protective clothing to protect the forest.
